Pagar? Pegar?

Kosmo! reported the allegations by a runner-up of a Malay language public speaking competition of mistakes in two proverbs.

Awang Abdul Rashid Awang Damit from Brunei said the words pagar makan padi in the proverb harapkan pagar, pagar makan padi was meaningless and that the proverb was actually referring to a bird known as pegar. He added that batuk in melepaskan batuk di tangga did not refer to a cough; instead, it meant batok a coconut shell used to scoop water for washing feet.

The mistakes could have happened when translating the proverbs from traditional Jawi, he stated. However, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka disagreed with him and said the spelling of the words could not be changed at whim.

This is copied directly from Thestar.com.my. I actually agree with him. Macam lah jugak bahasa inggeris. Kenapa ‘4’ di eja F-O-U-R, walhal ’40’ di eja -F-O-R-T-Y, tapi di sebut dengan cara yang sama (4 – for , 40 – fortee). I got this from Ellen’s latest book by the way. My point is, ‘ikan’ di eja di dalam jawi adalah ‘alif-kaf-nun’. Kalau ikut sebutan, bunyi nya ‘a-ka-n’. Am I on the right track here? Correct me if I’m wrong, but the world of language is so universal, it’s more complicated than life itself.

I always believe, if it makes sense it is easier for us to understand. I hope this doesn’t confuse everyone. I hope DBP clears this up soon because my children will soon be learning this. If it’s wrong, I don’t want them to grow up learning and believing that it’s correct.

Sekian.
